New Board Member
My Brother’s Keeper is prod to welcome Kent Harrell of WFRV-TV ch. 5 to our Board of Directors.

2013 Harry Sydney Open
Online registration is now open for the annual golf fundraising event for My Brother’s Keeper. We will be announcing hole-in-one prizes, silent auction items and additional details about his years event soon!

2013 Steak Fry
Date has yet to be determined, but the location will be at The Marq in Suamico! Check back for additional details soon!

Client and Group Forum Update
From January 2013 through April 2013, My Brother’s Keeper has served 636 clients this year already – including 120 new clients!

In addition, 193 clients have been served in group forum sessions.

Why do we spend so much time and energy on worrying about things we can’t control instead of focusing on controlling what we can?

Many of my clients struggle with just this. Instead of just focusing on the little things they can control, they worry about this or that and create that storm that just stops them in their tracks and makes them feel out of control.

FEELING HELPLESS??

Instead of trying to control everything and everyone and getting frustrated because you can’t, how about we simply control the one thing that we can and that is ourselves!!!

Create the change that you want and TAKE CONTROL OF YOU!!!

Dealing with Frustration

Recently in some sessions with clients I have noticed that a common occurrence is that men are trying to cope and deal with being angry, flat out pissed off at the world, or mad. The biggest problem is that they couldn’t put their finger on why they were angry! They think it’s the job, wife, kids and often times – it’s none of those things.

This is what I call being Frustrated!!!!

Frustration occurs when we get MAD at other people because they don’t think like us. If you think about how many times we get upset or frustrated because you can’t figure out why people do what they do? Whether it’s your spouse, your lady, your man, the kid’s, even the dog.

Now you need to ask yourself why they would think like you or me if they haven’t walked in our shoes?

They won’t, so why do we expect them too???

FRUSTRATION!

Just having a conversation and sitting down and making time to express your feelings can make an incredible difference. If you take the time to talk to your partner in life and actively discuss your feelings, it will open the door to a number of positive things and help establish positive building blocks in your relationships.

Often times we expect others to know and understand our thoughts and feelings. In reality, we haven’t given the people in our lives enough time to have those critical conversations.

Just a conversation!!!

2012 Honoring Our Wounded Heroes

Thank you for your support of Honoring Our Wounded Heroes. Your support helps us to keep our doors open and our program operating!

This year we honored three soldiers from our community who have been injured in the line of duty. Our real heroes.

Derek Gagne

While Derek Gagne was proudly serving his country in Iraq, he sustained life changing injuries. While on patrol in Iraq, a mine blew up under his Humvee, taking the lives away from his friends and changing his life forever. Derek lost his right leg from the knee down, the toes on his left foot, his left eye, and hearing in his left ear. What he didn’t lose was his spirit and fight to live.

Derek was told he would be recuperating in Walter Reed Hospital for 18 months. He was out in 9. The spirit and demeanor of someone who sustained the injuries he did is unbelievable. Derek graduated from college last year and continues to bowl, play in a pick-up basketball league, and races stock cars. All with a prosthetic leg. He has such a positive attitude on life that it is contagious. And recently this past weekend, he won his first race in his car since the injury.

Robert Harding

I was active Army with the 1st Battalion 1IN DIV 33rd Field Artillery out of Bamberg, Germany. I was married with one child. I went to Iraq in Feb 2004. There I performed many duties there. The first 3 months, I did convoy security for our convoys. Taking superiors to meeting to picking up supplies. On Aug 24, 2004 my life had change. I was severely injured by an IED( Improvise Exploding Device). I was coming back in a convoy when an IED exploded next to my vehicle. Knocking me out for a few seconds. When I came to my right arm was not moving when I was moving around. I thought I lost my arm for good. My driver rendered first aid on me. Two other soldiers were injured in the explosion. We were evac to the nearest field hospital. Once there, they took care of me and my injuries. Not knowing the damage was done to my arm, I still had it when I woke up from being in the operating room. Two days later I was sent to Germany for more care.

Being there, I had an operation to stabilizer the arm. Sept 1,2004 I was flown to Walter Reed for more care. I had several operations to repair my right elbow. I had an open fracture to the right elbow. The humorous and the ulna bones were shattered and the ulna nerve was severed. I was in the hospital for 6 weeks. Oct 15th I was an outpatient for the next 7 months. I did a lot of physical and occupation therapy. I live here in Berlin, WI with my daughter. She is the most beautiful thing that I live for. I do have issue with my injuries but I don’t let that get me down. I look at it and say it could have been worse. My family and friends have been there for me and I thank them for doing so.

Justin Lane

Justin Lane is in the US Army Reserves, 428th Division out of Wausau. He is 23 years old and lived in Green Bay prior to being stationed in Afghanistan. Justin has two brothers and a sister. His parents are Art and Kristi Lane of Green Bay.

Justin went to Afghanistan in the fall of 2010 and is part of 21 Bravo Combat Engineer and responsible for clearing IED’s. On July 2, 2011, his parents received the call no one wants to receive. His vehicle was blown up by an IED. Whereas, the damage to the vehicle was substantial it did not even begin to match the damage and injuries that Justin sustained when this explosion took place. It would be months before his parents would know if he would live or die.

The IED went off directly underneath where Justin was sitting. The result was the loss of his legs (one at the knee, one just below ), brain trauma, massive internal injuries, spinal cord being separated from his pelvis, his right arm suffered multiple compound fractures, fractured jaw where the entire mouth had to be redone, and a compound fracture of the left femur. To date Justin has experienced more than two dozen surgeries to repair the damage that was done during this explosion.

Thankfully, we can roll forward to the present. Justin is currently in San Antonio, receiving absolutely the best care one can receive for the types of injuries that he has sustained. He just received his new prosthetics. His car is being converted so he can drive soon. Justin is doing better and is adjusting to his new set of circumstances. There is so much that we take for granted. Even the simplest of tasks are difficult for him.

The 2012 Harry Sydney Open has come and gone, and it goes down in the books as the most attended one yet!

Thank you to everyone, the golfers, sponsors, volunteers, and employees of Fox Hills Resort for making this year’s Harry Sydney Open a successful one!

The 2012 Harry Sydney Open had 52 foursomes playing The Miller Lite Shootout and The Fan Scramble!

My Brother’s Keeper receives Hometown Hero Award from Wisconsin State Assembly

My Brother’s Keeper Male Mentoring Program and its founder, Harry Sydney, received a Hometown Hero Award on Thursday, Nov. 3, from the Wisconsin State Assembly in the Assembly Chamber at the State Capitol in Madison.

Representative Chad Weininger (District 4) presented Sydney with the award during a session of the Assembly in front of State Assembly Representatives, family members of former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson, and another former Green Bay Packer, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, who was on hand to give the opening prayer before the session.

Sydney and My Brother’s Keeper, who has mentored more than 9,000 boys and men since 2003, received two standing ovations during the award presentation.
